I’m Robert Bowden

— but everyone calls me Rob.

I’m a business advisor and accountant with 25 years’ experience helping owners of businesses turning over £250k to £2.5m cut through the noise, avoid the traps, and make better decisions.

No jargon. No gloss. Just the truth about what really happens in business.

My Story

I started out in accountancy and tax, and over the years I’ve worked across the full spectrum of advisory services.

What those 25 years have taught me is this: bigger isn’t always better.

The big firms may look impressive, but they don’t always have the depth of experience that comes from being in the trenches with real business owners. They don’t always get it. I do — because I’ve lived it, and I’ve seen others live it.

And I’ve also been privileged enough to see others go through these challenges — and learn from what they did wrong.

What Accountants Don’t Tell You

Here’s the truth: a lot of what you hear from accountants and advisors is dressed up. Just like a bank manager, many are employees. They don’t always understand what it’s really like to run your own business.

That gap matters. Because what a business owner truly needs is more than just numbers dressed in jargon — it’s context, perspective, and someone who knows the messy reality behind the spreadsheets.

The Transactional FD Problem

There’s a growing market for outsourced or “fractional” finance directors from groups like the FD or CFO Centre. And don’t get me wrong — many of them are brilliant accountants.

But here’s the catch: most of them cut their teeth in multi-million-pound companies with turnovers of £10, £20, even £30 million. The same rules don’t apply when you’re running a business with revenues between £250k and £2.5m.

Yes, the mechanics of accountancy stay the same. But the advice, the risks, and the problems you face at that level are very different. That’s where the right kind of experience matters.

Business Owner vs. Entrepreneur

Something else I’ve come to see clearly: there’s a big difference between being self-employed, being a business owner, and being an entrepreneur.

Everyone loves to call themselves an entrepreneur these days. The truth? Not everyone is.

I’m not an entrepreneur.
I run a business.
I happen to be good at it.

Each of those roles comes with different challenges and different mindsets — and they don’t always overlap. Understanding which one you are is half the battle.
Beyond Work

On Tax, HMRC, and Political Madness

I also spend time commentating on the absurdity of the British tax system — complicated far beyond where it needs to be.

And then there’s HMRC: a machine that too often ties business owners in knots with bureaucracy, poor systems, and customer service that leaves much to be desired.

On the political front, I’ve lost count of how many times people have referred to Rachel Reeves as “Rachel from Accounts.” Let’s be honest: no accountant in their right mind would make some of the decisions she has.

Sometimes the only way to make sense of it all is to call it out plainly — and that’s something I’m not shy about doing.

    What I Do Today

Today, I work with business owners in that £250k–£2.5m bracket who want grounded, straight-talking advice.

I help them see the pitfalls, avoid the traps, and make better decisions.

My role isn’t to impress you with jargon or hide behind big-firm polish. It’s to give you clarity, context, and a plan that actually works in the real world.

    Beyond Work

I’m a deeply private person. What I will say is that I love to travel, and I love to sit and watch people.

For me, one of life’s greatest pleasures is figuring out what makes people tick. Because once you understand what motivates someone, you understand how to work with them — and more importantly, how to advise them.
